Step 2’s new Cafe Barista is a fun pretend prop that very much reflects our coffee-addicted life style. For so many older toddlers and preschoolers that accompany their parents to Starbucks for their Lattes and Mistos…the loud machines that create these drinks are a part of their lives. The Cafe Barista comes with two large cups and a smaller cup (for the froth of course!). The machine does make a good deal of noise…true to the real thing. Watch our video. Read our full review, www.toyportfolio.com. Our only complaint…the cups have holes in them — so this is strictly a pretend drinking toy. For some folks this is preferred…but for most toddlers…the filling and spilling of water in a real cup is a great deal of fun. The holes are there for safety purposes–we applaud the concern but hope the team at Step2 can fashion a solution that addresses both function and safety.

Rocky the Talking Truck and Monty T-Rex Dance it Out!
Talking Truck dances with Roaring T-Rex….watch the video.
So after I got done video taping these guys, I went back to work in the other room. But it turns out they didn’t need me to keep going…here are two photos taking about 20 minutes apart…they are quite able to entertain themselves…and move about! In the second photo it looks like Monty is leading a Congo line!
Dora the Explorer Pinched Me!
The new Dora the Explorer Dance Around Dora (from Fisher-Price) dances, twirls, dances on her toes and sings. She even encourages kids to dance with her–also fun. I’m usually not a huge fan of Dora dolls…a bit too plastic for us–but she’s such a huge hit with the preschool crowd, we always take a look. When Dora goes up on her toes–her body expands underneath. Now part of my job is to stick my finger where most kids might…so as her body returned to its original size, I put my finger in the space and sure enough, she pinched me! Not horribly–but something to be aware of. Watch the video.
We're launched…
not officially until the morning but the new site is up! Take a look….www.toyportfolio.com

Lovies
If you have a toddler or preschooler, they probably have grown attached to one particular stuffed animal or blanket. These often well-worn “lovies” become such important touchstones, that we often recommend you have a backup. With my younger son, we spent hours scouring toy and gift stores for exactly the same Simba doll that sadly went missing at the park. Even at two, he knew the difference.
I’m always curious about how this relationship develops. With our older son Adam, we even have a photo of the first encounter. From the moment he hugged his first Gund Snuffles at his first birthday party, it was love. Even though he couldn’t talk yet, this particular bear became his constant companion and eventually would become the Mama bear to a family of smaller Snuffles. The original bear’s nose was so thread bare that we had to do a midnight exchange. (My mother was afraid that he would literally bite off his nose! ) Even as he got much older and welcomed a new brother–who of course had to have his own family of bears–this lovey remained in an honored position.
One of the great pleasures of the evening was to eavesdrop on the elaborate stories both boys would weave about their polar bears. They each had silly names, their own language and as a nod to the world they live in, they had their own Polar Bear TV Network–with lots of different programs.
Of course I still highly recommend Gund’s Snuffles. He is an institution in our house. A nearby children’s store always had a wonderful display of snuffles during the holidays..and since my kids rarely went to toy stores, it was extremely special for them to actually go buy a new bear to add to their growing family.
Here are some other choices that may invite such relationships:
1. North American Bear’s Collection of Flatsos. Take your pick, there are pink Elephants, Blue Hippos, Green Frogs…each come in a variety of sizes and are fantastically floppy and deliciously huggable.
2. Kids Preferred Asthma Friendly Puppy Dog is also very sweet and huggable.
3. Blabla dolls. I’m in love with this collection of dolls and animals. Pricey but very special.
4. Joobles. Deliciously soft and friendly…happily gender neutral.

Best Green Toy of the Week: Citiblocs (Addictive on the coffee table)
Sometimes we get toys that are marketed to kids and yet we find that almost every grown-up that comes near them just starts playing with them. Since playing is good at any age, I feel it’s very important to write about these types of products. You may remember that the magnetic building sets that burst onto the market several years ago had that appeal – making them a great choice to just have on the coffee table for some open-ended play time for anyone so inclined. Research also indicates that type of activity for adults is great for keeping those brain neurons firing.
This year’s winner in this category is Citiblocs by Citiblocs. At first you might think a box of equally- sized precision cut wooden pieces wouldn’t be that enthralling – at any age…but once you get building, it’s just fun to see how many different variations you can make. The pieces are very smooth and are made of Radiata Pine from certified renewable forests in New Zealand – making them not only fun, but onto our Green Toy list as well.
Each set comes with ideas for building…they are marked 3 & up, we’d say more like 5 & up and & up and & up!
One of our tester moms (an architect) — LOVED this product. Somehow we knew she would.

Cartons from Mattel and the new website
Just when I thought we were done with the bulk of our testing, some very large cartons arrived from Mattel today. We peeked into one box to discover My Three Muskateer Barbie–her gown turns into a cape. It made both of us laugh. We decided to close the box for the evening. Tomorrow is another day for toy testing!
The new website is going to be fantastic. We’re busy working on getting it ready–which is why my postings have been pretty slim the last few weeks. We’ve decided to keep up reviews of old products that are discontinued but may find their way to you through family or friends. (With the exception of craft kits and toys that probably won’t be passed down.) These products were not required to meet our safety requirements — so now we’re deciding how to address this issue so that we’ve made that clear.
I’m hearing from a lot of you, that you’d like downloadable pdf’s of our lists…birthday lists especially. Working on finding the best way to do that as well. So if you have other suggestions keep them coming. It’s also been nice to hear from so many readers that they miss the book. As much as we liked doing the book, the freedom of space and time to work on the website has been most welcomed…neither of us miss the horrible crunch to get the manuscript done as the toys kept pouring in!
